2022 THEME

Modern medicine is suffering from fragmentation, contributing to a lower quality of care, a loss of trust in the healing relationship, and low patients’ and providers’ satisfaction. To protect the patients and the providers, new health systems are being engineered in the hope that measurable outcomes can be improved.

But T.S. Eliot’s 90-year-old question remains relevant today: are we “dreaming of systems so perfect that no one will need to be good”? Are systemic improvements with a focus on measuring outcomes enough to heal medicine? We suggest that structures and organizational changes will ultimately not be sufficient. Only a comprehensive and creative involvement with each patient leading to a trusting partnership may lead to more human and truly efficient medicine.

Through encounters with guest speakers and conversations among participants, we hope to engage health care providers in a reflection and dialogue on the nature of their medical care, aiming to open horizons and perspectives that may deepen their awareness of what it means to be a health care provider.
